From needing research support to publishing ten papers a year
The measure of good mentorship is that the researcher stops needing it. Several of ours went from supported projects to ten-plus papers a year.
Through our research mentorship programmes we have supported researchers not only in completing individual projects but in developing the skills to conduct research independently. The mentorship covers developing research questions, protocol preparation, literature searching, data management, statistical analysis, scientific writing, responding to reviewers and journal selection. After completing the programme, several researchers have gone on to publish more than ten papers within a single year — a transition from receiving research support to becoming productive and increasingly independent researchers.
The brief
Researchers who can produce a paper with help, but cannot yet produce one without it, are in the most expensive position in academic medicine. Each project restarts the same dependency. The goal of the programme is to end it.
What the programme covers
Mentorship is delivered on the mentee's own project, not on a teaching dataset, and covers the full arc:
- Developing a research question that is specific, feasible and worth answering
- Protocol preparation and design justification
- Reproducible literature searching
- Data management that makes a dataset analysable from the start
- Statistical analysis, assumption checking and honest interpretation
- Scientific writing, section by section
- Responding to reviewers without conceding what is defensible
- Journal selection and submission
The outcome
Following completion, several researchers have gone on to publish more than ten papers within a single year — a clear transition from receiving research support to producing independent work.
Taken together with our institutional partnerships, this reflects the three things we are actually trying to do: manage research at scale, rescue and strengthen difficult manuscripts, and build long-term research capacity rather than simply completing individual projects.
